About Us

Mission: To provide opportunities for individuals and families to be healthy and connected in order to create a stronger community.

Vision: The HART Community Center, Inc. is seen by the Harrisburg community as the place to come for resources and activities.

The History of H.A.R.T.

The H.A.R.T. Family Resource Center opened its doors in 1998 with Peggy Purkerson as the Executive Director with the help of original funding through the Commission on Children and Families in a bill passed during the 1997-99 Oregon Legislature. The CCF partners with citizens and professionals to help improve the lives of children and families in the local communities of Oregon. Since the beginning we have worked to provide services, resources and activities that are necessary and needed by the residents of Harrisburg and those living within the surrounding School District boundary. Two months after we opened our doors to the public we hosted an eleven-week Parent ed/preschool class which developed into the co-op preschool that we still operate today.

We have offered many programs such as: Second Steps Violence Prevention training to Harrisburg teachers, after school programs and summer camps staffed by volunteers, a dental van that comes twice a year to help citizens with dental needs that have no insurance, WIC, Love and Logic Parenting Class, ESL classes and much more.

In 2001 we moved into a modular building for financial and safety reasons and in 2013 we celebrated H.A.R.T.’s 15th year anniversary. On May, 2014 Peggy Purkerson retired as the center’s Executive Director, and Edie Moro was hired as her replacement and she held that position for three years. In July, 2016 The H.A.R.T. Family Resource Center split from the City of Harrisburg and became the H.A.R.T. Community Center as a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization. In July of 2017, Edie Moro retired as the Executive Director, and Maggie Cooley was hired as her replacement.

We are now in our 23rd year of serving the Harrisburg community and we are looking forward to what is to come.
